LEGO removes black background from instruction manuals

According to our friends at Brickset, LEGO plans to remove the black background from the instruction manuals. Earlier today, buyer Sam Walker posted on the Facebook group a screenshot of a LEGO customer support response in which the company states: “We received feedback on the background color in our instructions. We have already done a lot of testing and plan to completely stop using the black background.”

Dark backgrounds were featured in the 18+ range of sets for adult LEGO lovers, which were recently rebranded after launching last summer. The instructions in black were a big disappointment to the audience, as the low contrast made the darker color elements very difficult to distinguish. And some elements completely merged and disappeared, as we noted in our review of 10275 Elf Clubhouse (Elf House).

LEGO is trying to fix this problem in many ways, such as making the outlines of elements more prominent. The latest kits (10295 Porsche 911 Turbo and 911 Targa) come with instructions in black. But on the LEGO website, the version of the instructions with the traditional light background has been updated and is available for download. Other recent “18+” sets (such as 21325 Medieval Blacksmith) had paper instructions with a light background in the set. It’s not clear if this is because of the innovations, or because this set is part of the Ideas product line and not Creator Expert.

The LEGO Company also responded to Sam Walker that they are working with designers on color conflicts when creating revised guides.
