Diapers – functional underwear designed to absorb liquid waste products of the baby and protect his outer clothing and bed from contamination. Diapers are more secure than panties because they hold more liquid. They completely cover the child’s pelvis (groin, hips, abdomen) and are designed for children of all ages. But at the same time, they are bulky and uncomfortable during the movement of the baby.

Panties – in appearance they resemble ordinary underpants and are designed for older children who move a lot. Panties do not constrain the child during movement, they are more convenient to put on, and they are invisible under clothing. However, the degree of protection of panties is lower than that of diapers. This allows the child to be taught to use the toilet.

Usage

Disposable – are not intended to be reused. These diapers are the most common. They perfectly absorb moisture, thereby reducing the risk of developing diaper dermatitis. In addition, parents do not have to spend time and energy on washing and drying. But disposable diapers are more expensive than reusable diapers because they need to be replenished periodically.

Important: Do not reuse a disposable diaper as it will not absorb moisture and may harm the baby. Change disposable diapers every two to three hours.

reusable – designed for repeated use. They are cheaper than disposables. On the other hand, reusable diapers are less hygienic – they absorb moisture worse, and washing them requires effort and time from parents. Rarely seen.

Gender of the child

Depending on the structural features of the genitourinary system of boys and girls, there are such types of diapers:

• for boys – the bulk of the absorbent material is located in the front of the diaper;

• for girls – the bulk of the absorbent layer is in the middle part of the diaper;
• unisex – the absorbent filler is distributed evenly over the entire lower surface, which makes it possible to use such a diaper for both boys and girls.

Size

The size of diapers depends on the weight, height and physique of the baby. However, it is important to remember that with the same weight, the physique of two children can differ significantly, which means that different diaper models will suit them. Sizes can be divided into the following categories:

• new born (new baby) – weight up to 5 kg, height 50-57 cm;
• mini – weight 3-8 kg, height 52-60 cm;
• midi – weight 5-11 kg, height 55-70 cm;
• maxi – weight 9-18 kg, height 65-100 cm;
• maxi More – weight 10-20 kg, height 87-120 cm;
• extra large – weight 15-25 kg, height from 100 cm.

It often happens that two adjacent options may be suitable for one child.

Important: too large diapers do not fit snugly to the body and often leak, and too small ones fill up quickly and rub the baby’s skin.

Soak time

The amount of time your baby will be dry in a diaper. Packages may say 9, 12 or 24 hours. The higher this indicator, the longer the child can stay in a diaper without changing it. Products with 24 hours are well suited for long distance trips.

Important: do not keep the baby in a diaper for a long time, even with a long absorption time.

Purpose

breathable – able to pass air and allow the baby’s skin to breathe normally. In the outer layer of such diapers there is a film with many microscopic holes that allow air to pass well, but retain moisture. Breathable diapers are more expensive than regular diapers, but they reduce the risk of diaper rash on the baby’s skin.

Night – can absorb large amounts of moisture. These diapers have a thick absorbent layer. Well suited not only for sleeping, but also for long walks. However, they can be uncomfortable for active child play.

For swimming – perfectly absorb moisture during a long stay of the child in the water (pool), without swelling at the same time, since the outer layer does not let water through. In addition, bath diapers reliably protect the skin and genitals of the child from the harmful effects of bacteria or reagents. However, they are not intended for everyday use (sleep, walk).

For potty training – absorb moisture with some delay, so that the baby is convinced that he is wet. This unpleasant sensation will form the habit of sitting on the potty.

Hypoallergenic – intended for children who are allergic (“intolerant”) to conventional products. These diapers are made from breathable materials, they do not include latex and other additives that can cause an allergic reaction. Diapers are highly absorbent, which ensures minimal contact of the baby’s skin with moisture.

Fixation

Velcro – are most often found in disposable diapers. They are easy to use, inexpensive, thin and quite reliable. Velcro does not create inconvenience for the baby.

Buttons – used in reusable diapers. They are more reliable than Velcro, however, they are more expensive. They are almost never found in disposable products.

Sometimes you can find buttons (in some reusable products), ribbons and elastic bands (in disposable diapers).

Equipment

Fill indicator – indicates the degree of filling of the diaper. It looks like a signal strip at the top of the product. When moisture fills the absorbent material (absorbent layer), then under its influence the color of the indicator changes. This allows you to monitor the condition of the diaper and change it in a timely manner.

Pocket – prevents the flow of loose stools of a newborn baby. It is located on the belt at the back.

Notch for the navel – found in diapers for newborns. This cutout leaves the belly button open to make it easier to care for – this is necessary in the first days after the birth of the baby.

Number of diapers per pack

This parameter will allow you to estimate how long the pack will last. It is known that more capacious packages are cheaper if their cost is converted to one diaper. However, in this case, there is a possibility of wasting money, since diapers are not tested in practice. Therefore, it is better to purchase small packages for testing.

Important: do not purchase diapers individually “for testing”, as there is no guarantee that they are clean and safe for the baby.

Inserts – absorbent inserts provided in the design of reusable diapers. There are diapers with one and two inserts in the kit. The second liner can be used as a spare while the first one is still drying after washing. For night and daytime sleep, it is advisable to use two inserts in one diaper at once. This will increase the degree of protection of the product.

When choosing diapers, you should give preference only to proven and reliable brands, for example, Pampers, Huggies, Chicco, Libero, Goo.N, Merries, Moony. The most important thing in this product is the materials of manufacture. Eco-friendly, anti-allergic and breathable diapers can’t be cheap. Therefore, saving on the purchase is not worth it.
